Christmas in Newcastle 2026

Christmas in Newcastle happens mostly on foot. The lights, the market, Fenwick's window, the pantomime and the cathedral are all within ten minutes' walk of Grey's Monument, so a festive day out in the city rarely needs more than a Metro ticket and good shoes.

This guide gives the confirmed 2026 dates where they have been published, and says so where they have not.

The lights switch-on

Newcastle City Council has confirmed that the Christmas lights switch-on is on Thursday 12 November 2026 at Grey's Monument. It is free and needs no ticket, with entertainment from 6pm and the lights going on at 7pm. The 2026 line-up has not been announced yet.

Our full guide to the Christmas lights switch-on in Newcastle covers where to stand, accessibility and food nearby.

The Christmas Market

The Newcastle Christmas Market runs from Thursday 19 November to Wednesday 23 December 2026, with over 70 traders along Grey Street, Grainger Street and around the Monument. It is free to browse, and a separate Christmas Village with rides and Santa Stories sits on Old Eldon Square.

For the layout, traders and other markets nearby, see our guide to Christmas markets in Newcastle.

Fenwick's Christmas window

Fenwick's window on Northumberland Street has been a Newcastle tradition for generations. The 2026 window was revealed on the evening of Sunday 1 November and is based on The Gruffalo's Child by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler, told as a run of animated scenes. It is on show until early January 2027.

Viewing is free from the pavement.

Best for: a free half-hour with young children, combined with the market a few minutes away.

Pantomime and Christmas shows

The Theatre Royal on Grey Street stages the region's biggest pantomime. This year it is Jack and the Beanstalk, from Tuesday 24 November 2026 to Sunday 17 January 2027. Weekend and school-holiday performances sell out first.

Northern Stage at Barras Bridge has a new version of The Snow Queen, from 3 December to 2 January. For the under-fives it also has The Christmas Sorting Office, in which the audience helps sort children's letters to Santa. In the Ouseburn, Seven Stories has its own family panto, Little Red Reading Hood, from 28 November to 3 January.

For older audiences, the Tyne Theatre and Opera House has ELF The Musical from 18 to 21 November.

Meeting Santa

The Life Science Centre runs The Santa Experience: Operation Christmas Eve from 21 November to 23 December. It is aimed at children aged about 3 to 10 and works on timed, pre-booked sessions.

For something different, Christmas in the Victoria Tunnel sends families through the wartime air-raid shelter under the Ouseburn, following clues to find Santa. The Christmas Village on Old Eldon Square also has Santa Stories during the market.

Ice skating

Life's open-air ice rink in Times Square returns from Saturday 7 November 2026 to Sunday 3 January 2027. It suits all abilities, and tickets are sold by session. In past years the rink has closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day, so check Life's website before planning a visit over the holidays.

Carols and the cathedral

Newcastle Cathedral, the Cathedral Church of St Nicholas, is the centre of the city's Christmas music. The Brass and Chorus of Royal Northern Sinfonia bring their winter tour of carols and choral favourites there on Thursday 26 November.

The cathedral's own 2026 Christmas services are not all listed yet. In 2025 the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols was at 6pm on Christmas Eve, followed by Candlelit Midnight Mass, so check its Advent and Christmas listings for this year's times.

Festive walks

Northern Lights turns about a kilometre of Leazes Park into an illuminated trail every night from 20 November to 31 December, with timed tickets from 4.15pm.

For a free walk, a loop from the Monument down Grey Street to the Quayside and back through Grainger Town takes in the lights, the market and the river. Our best walks in Newcastle city centre has routes, and the Grainger Town heritage walk suits a crisp December afternoon.

Boxing Day and New Year

On Boxing Day, Saturday 26 December, Newcastle United's fixture list has them at home to Manchester City at St James' Park. Kick-off times can still change for television, so check the club's site before you travel.

New Year's Eve centres on the Quayside. Howaymanay, the ticketed party with two stages and a midnight fireworks finale over the Tyne, runs from 8.30pm to 12.15am, and there is a free family fireworks display at 6pm. Our Howaymanay guide has tickets and entrances. Runners can start the evening earlier with the HogmanHOWAY 5K at 7.30pm, which goes along Northumberland Street this year.

Shopping late

The Christmas Market trades until 8pm Monday to Saturday and 5pm on Sundays. Eldon Square and the larger stores usually extend their hours in December, but the 2026 Christmas opening times had not been published when we wrote this, so check before a late trip.

Getting there: Metro, Park and Ride and parking

The Metro is the easiest way in. Monument station comes up in the middle of the market, with Haymarket and Central Station close by. Nexus Park and Ride car parks at Metro stations, including Callerton Parkway, Bank Foot, Regent Centre, Four Lane Ends and Northumberland Park, let you leave the car outside the city centre. Kingston Park is run by the city council and has different charges.

If you drive, expect the city-centre multi-storeys to be busy on December Saturdays. Nexus has not yet published its 2026 Christmas and New Year timetable. In 2025 there was no Metro on Christmas Day and a reduced service on Boxing Day, so check before travelling on the bank holidays.
