Christmas Lights Switch-On in Newcastle 2026
Newcastle switches on its Christmas lights on Thursday 12 November 2026 at Grey's Monument. It is free with no tickets, a week before the Christmas Market opens. Here is where to stand, how to get there and what is still to be announced.
Newcastle's Christmas starts at the top of Grey Street. The city's lights switch-on is the evening when the Monument fills with families, the Georgian street below lights up in one go, and the festive season officially begins in the city centre, a week before the Christmas Market chalets arrive.
The date for 2026
Newcastle City Council has confirmed that Newcastle's annual Christmas Lights Switch-On is on Thursday 12 November 2026. It is held at Grey's Monument, where Grey Street, Grainger Street and Blackett Street meet, and it is free, with no tickets needed.
The council describes it as the start of the festive season, bringing the city centre to life ahead of the Christmas Market, which opens a week later on Thursday 19 November.
Running order and line-up
The event has followed the same shape in recent years: live entertainment from 6pm, with the lights going on at 7pm. The official NewcastleGateshead listing gives those times again for 2026, but it also says the full programme is still to come, so treat them as the expected pattern until the line-up is published.
In 2025 the evening was billed with Hits Radio breakfast presenters Steve and Karen, stars of the city's pantomime and festive surprises. The 2026 hosts, performers and the person pressing the switch have not yet been announced. Check Newcastle City Council's news pages, the NewcastleGateshead events listing and newcastleschristmas.com nearer the date.
Where to stand
The stage and the countdown are focused on the Monument itself. The crowd spreads down the top of Grey Street and along Blackett Street, and the area fills well before 7pm, so arriving early is the official advice.
For the lights rather than the stage, stand a little way down Grey Street towards the Theatre Royal, where you see more of the street. With small children, the edges of the crowd are easier to leave in a hurry.
Best for:
Best for: families who want the countdown, and anyone who wants to see Grey Street lit before the market stalls fill it.
Getting there
Monument Metro brings you up directly underneath the event, which makes it the simplest way in, though the station will be very busy straight after the switch-on. Haymarket Metro is a five-minute walk away and is usually the calmer choice for getting home. Central Station is at the bottom of Grainger Street, about ten minutes' walk, and Eldon Square bus station is close to the Monument.
Public transport is the recommended way to come, partly because of the ongoing Tyne Bridge restoration works. If you must drive, use one of the multi-storey car parks around Eldon Square and expect queues to get out after 7pm. Road closures and traffic arrangements for 2026 have not been published yet.

Accessibility
Monument and Haymarket Metro stations both have lifts. The top of Grey Street is fairly level, but the street drops steeply towards Dean Street, and Grainger Street is flatter throughout. The crowd at the Monument itself is dense around 7pm, so wheelchair users and anyone with a pushchair may find the edges of Blackett Street or Grainger Street more comfortable. No dedicated viewing area has been announced for 2026.
Food and drink nearby
Grey Street has plenty within a couple of minutes' walk. Blake's Coffee House is at the Monument end of Grey Street, and 100 Grey Street, next to the Theatre Royal, is an easy place for a drink before or after. Zizzi on Grey Street is a straightforward family dinner, and The Botanist in Monument Mall overlooks the Monument itself. Expect all of them to be busy on the night, so book ahead if you want a table.
Best for:
Best for: an early tea on Grey Street, then out to the Monument by half past six.
Making an evening of it
It is a Thursday, so it is worth checking late opening hours if you want to shop before or after. Fenwick on Northumberland Street, with Colman's at Fenwick and Cafe Filto inside, is a short walk away. Fenwick's famous Christmas window is traditionally unveiled in November, but the 2026 date and theme have not been announced. Central Arcade links Grainger Street and Grey Street under the Monument and is the dry route if the weather turns. The Grainger Market keeps shop hours and will be closed by switch-on time.
