About Colman's at Fenwick

Colman's has been frying fish in South Shields since 1926 and is now run by the fifth generation of the same family, which makes it comfortably the best-known chip shop name in the North East. This is its Newcastle city-centre outpost, inside the Fenwick department store on Northumberland Street, and it lets you eat the family's fish and chips without making the trip to the coast.

It is a sit-down restaurant rather than a counter, keeping the store's hours: roughly half eleven to half six Monday to Saturday, and half eleven to half four on a Sunday. The kitchen follows the parent business's long-standing line on sustainably sourced fish, and there are gluten-free options. Best treated as lunch during a day in town, since it is shut long before a late supper.
