Christmas Trees in Newcastle: Where to Buy and Recycle
Where to buy a real Christmas tree from Newcastle city centre, including a pick-your-own farm, a tree yard that delivers and a garden centre with pot-grown trees, plus tree care and how to recycle it in January.
City centre living and real Christmas trees don't always mix. Many people here live in flats, have no car and no garden, and nobody sells trees on Northumberland Street. But two tree farms, a tree yard and a garden centre are all within about twenty minutes of Grey's Monument, and several of them deliver. When January comes there is a charity collection that will take the tree away from your door. This guide covers both ends of the season. For the lights, market and pantos, see Christmas in Newcastle.
Where to buy a real tree
Lamesley Farm, Old Ravensworth (pick your own)
Across the river, Lamesley Farm on Haggs Lane at Old Ravensworth (NE11 0HU) is about fifteen minutes' drive from the centre via the Team Valley. It describes itself as Newcastle's only pick-your-own Christmas tree farm. You walk the field to choose a Norway spruce or Nordmann fir, or take a tree already cut and prepared by staff, and it sells stands and wreaths as well. For 2026 there are early access weekends on 14, 15, 21 and 22 November, from 9am to 3pm, before the official opening on Friday 27 November. You can click and collect to skip the queue, and delivery is available if you have no car.
Northern Christmas Trees, Gosforth
The nearest tree yard to town is Northern Christmas Trees at McCracken Park on the Great North Road in Gosforth (NE3 2DT), about ten minutes north. Trading since 1997, it sells Nordmann firs and Norway spruces in a wide range of sizes and takes telephone orders and deliveries, the simplest way to get a tree up to a flat. Its 2026 dates had not been published in early November, so check its website or social media.
Broomhall Christmas Trees, Black Callerton
Broomhall Christmas Trees at Broom Hall Farm, Black Callerton (NE5 1NS) is around twenty minutes west. The family business has sold trees for more than 35 years and stocks Nordmann firs, Fraser firs and Norway spruces from 4ft to 24ft. That makes it a good fit for offices, shops and venues that want a statement tree in the window. Pre-cut trees are laid out in a field so you can compare shapes. Broomhall opens on Thursday 26 November 2026.
Cowell's Garden Centre, Woolsington
Out near the airport, Cowell's Garden Centre on Main Road, Woolsington (NE13 8BW) is the best local choice for a small pot-grown tree. Its range runs from fresh-cut Nordmann, Noble and Fraser firs to pot-grown Nordmann, Korean and Fraser firs from about 80cm tall, the right size for a flat or a balcony. Trees can be pre-ordered online. It opens 9am to 5pm Monday to Saturday and 10am to 4.30pm on Sundays.
Choosing and caring for your tree
Nordmann fir is the one to choose for a warm flat. It keeps its soft needles well into January and doesn't leave a carpet of them in a shared stairwell. Norway spruce has the strongest scent and costs less, but drops needles faster in central heating, so buy it closer to Christmas.
Before you buy, measure your ceiling height, the lift or stair turn and your front door. Netted trees take up much less room on the way in. Once home:
- Cut a couple of centimetres off the trunk and stand it straight away in a stand that holds water.
- Top up the water every day, as a fresh tree drinks a lot in its first week.
- Keep it away from radiators, heaters and sunny windows, and switch the lights off when you go out.
- If you live in a managed block, check the building's rules on real trees first.
A pot-grown tree can live on a balcony or in a large container after Christmas. Keep it indoors for no more than about ten days, in a cool spot, and water it regularly.
Recycling your tree in January
Newcastle City Council's brown bin garden waste service is a paid subscription that runs from spring to late autumn, and most city centre flats don't have one. The council's waste pages listed no separate kerbside Christmas tree collection when we checked in November 2026. Please don't leave trees beside communal bins or in back lanes.
Book St Oswald's Tree-cycle. For most city centre residents the easiest option is St Oswald's Hospice, which collects real trees from homes across NE1 to NE16. Collections run from Monday 4 to Saturday 23 January 2027, with a Twelfth Night option for collection after 6 January. The recommended donation is £15 per tree. Trees must be no taller than 8ft with decorations and stands removed, and they are chipped at local recycling centres for use in landscaping and play parks. Book on the hospice website early, as slots have gone within the first days of January before.
Drive it to a recycling centre. The nearest of the council's household waste and recycling centres is Byker, Glasshouse Street, off Walker Road, Newcastle upon Tyne NE6 1AH, open daily from 8am to 6pm. Brunswick (Sandy Lane, NE13 7BA) and Walbottle (Walbottle Road, NE15 8HY, 9am to 6pm) also take garden waste. All three close on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day, and at 4pm on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve. Entry is by vehicle or cargo bike only, not on foot. Check the council's recycling centres page in December for changes.
Broomhall has also run a paid January collection from customers' homes. Check its website for 2027 details.
Artificial trees
If an artificial tree is still in good shape, keep using it, or ask a charity shop whether it can take it before throwing it away.
