Sport Central (Northumbria University)

About Sport Central (Northumbria University)

Sport Central is Northumbria University's flagship sports complex, on Northumberland Road in the middle of the city and only a short walk from the City Baths on the same street. Although it belongs to the university, it is a genuine public facility: membership is open to students, staff, alumni and the wider public, there is a community tier for local residents, and pay-as-you-go swimming is available for casual users. Opening hours run from 7am to 10pm, seven days a week, which makes it one of the more flexible central options. The pool itself is a 25-metre, six-lane design with a movable floor that adjusts the depth between 1.25 and 2 metres, so it works for beginners and serious swimmers alike, and it uses UV filtration to cut down on chemical use. A minimum of three lanes stays open through the day, and quieter sessions are offered midweek and at weekends for anyone sensitive to noise. Beyond the pool the building holds a large gym, a main arena and sports hall, badminton courts, a climbing wall and a full weekly class programme, along with a sauna and steam room, so it is arguably the most complete facility within walking distance of Grey's Monument.
