About Royal Grammar School

The Royal Grammar School traces its origins to the sixteenth century and is the best-known independent school in Newcastle, a co-educational day school taking pupils from age seven through to eighteen on a single site on Eskdale Terrace in Jesmond. It runs a junior school alongside the senior school on the same footprint, so a child can move through from Year 3 to the sixth form without changing campus, and it has a long academic record and a broad co-curricular programme in sport, music and the arts.

For families in and around the city centre the school is unusually accessible: it sits barely a mile from Haymarket, is a short walk from West Jesmond and Ilford Road Metro stations, and draws pupils from across Tyneside and Northumberland. Admission is by assessment, with entry points at seven, eleven, thirteen and into the sixth form, and the school offers means-tested bursaries.
