About Newcastle City Baths
Newcastle City Baths is the public pool at the heart of the city, in a Grade II listed building on Northumberland Road that opened in November 1928. It closed in 2013 as a council cost-cutting measure and looked as though it might be lost, but a restoration costing around £7.5 million brought it back, and it reopened to swimmers and gym users in January 2020. The restored Turkish Baths, with their glass dome, reopened separately in April 2024 and are among the most unusual surviving facilities of their kind in the region. The building went on to win a UK Pool and Spa Award in 2024. The main draw is a 25-yard pool used for lane swimming, lessons and aqua classes, alongside a gym, fitness studios running everything from yoga and Pilates to circuits, plus a sauna and the separately bookable Turkish Baths. The site is currently run on the council's behalf by Better, which took over operation in July 2026 after the previous operator entered administration, and swimmers have continued to use it without interruption. It sits less than five minutes' walk from Haymarket Metro, which makes it the most central pool in the city.
