About Elswick Park

Elswick Park lies a short distance west of the city centre, laid out in the Victorian era on ground between Elswick Road, Westmorland Road and Beech Grove Road to give the crowded industrial west end its own patch of open green. It went through a substantial refurbishment in 2007, and the years that followed added a community garden in 2009 and a community orchard in 2011, so alongside its lawns and mature trees the park has taken on a strong community-growing character. The Elswick Community Leisure Centre and its recently reopened pool sit within the park, which makes it a hub for the surrounding neighbourhoods rather than just a green space to pass through.

For families the park is genuinely well provided: a fenced children's play area equipped for a range of ages, plus tennis courts, a half-size basketball court, a five-a-side pitch, an interactive football wall, table tennis and a skate area, so there is something for toddlers and older children alike. The park is open at all times and free to use, and it is one of the sites earmarked in the council's programme of enhanced, more accessible play spaces for the years ahead. It is an easy bus ride or a brisk walk out from the centre along Westgate Road, and a useful option for anyone living in or near the west end.
