About The Common Room of the Great North
The Common Room of the Great North occupies Neville Hall on Westgate Road, the Grade II* listed home of the North of England Institute of Mining and Mechanical Engineers. The charity was formed to lead the restoration of the Victorian building and now runs exhibitions, talks and a research collection alongside commercial hire. Its centrepiece is the Wood Hall library, which has a glass vaulted ceiling, stained glass windows and a decorative cast-iron spiral staircase. The 5|Quarter cafe bar sits on the ground floor and opens Monday to Friday, 8am to 3pm. Six spaces are let over three floors, or the whole building for 350. Wood Hall takes 150 theatre style and 120 for dining; the Lecture Theatre seats 100 in fixed tiers; the Stephenson Room holds 50, the Map Room 40 and the Meeting Room 25. Three rooms are licensed for civil ceremonies. Catering is in house and a late licence can be arranged. Christmas packages run from £45 plus VAT a head for a two-course lunch to £70 and £85 for dinner with exclusive Wood Hall hire. Central Station is 150 metres away, there is no on-site parking, and a level Orchard Street entrance with platform lift gives step-free access.
