Premier Inn Newcastle City Centre (The Gate) opened in 2016 in the former Co-op department store on Newgate Street, a local landmark that had stood empty after the store closed. The restoration kept and repaired many original features, including the marble staircase, a cast iron arcade, the clock faces on the frontage and a war memorial to Co-op staff, which now stands in reception.

The hotel has 182 rooms with king-size beds and self-service check-in, and a Thyme restaurant serving breakfast and evening meals. Chinatown, the Grainger Market and St James' Park are all a few minutes' walk away, and Central Station is around ten minutes on foot.
