About Duke of Wellington

The Duke of Wellington is a classic small city-centre cask-ale pub on High Bridge, one of the narrow historic lanes linking Grey Street and Pilgrim Street. For many years it was known locally as Stokoe's, after the wine and spirit merchants Stokoe & Co who occupied the building, and it has a long trading history on the street; a colourful 1870s landlord, William Campbell, was reputedly one of the heaviest men in Britain of his day. The pub passed through CAMRA Investments ownership in the late 1970s before joining a larger brewery estate.

Compact and traditional, it focuses on well-kept real ale and a friendly, unpretentious atmosphere rather than food or nightlife, making it a good stop for a considered pint. It sits a few doors from Bacchus on the same street, so the two are easily combined, and both are within a couple of minutes of Monument Metro at the heart of the city centre.
