Soft Play in Newcastle City Centre

The middle of Newcastle is offices, shops and flats rather than family suburbs, so for years the honest answer to "where's the soft play in town?" was "a short Metro ride out". That has changed. There is now a proper soft play café on the top floor of Fenwick and a big jungle-themed centre inside Eldon Square, both a couple of minutes from Grey's Monument, with the region's largest dedicated centres a few stops out on the Metro. Here is where to take small children to climb, slide and burn off energy in and around the city centre.

Soft play in the city centre

Hopscotch Play Café at Fenwick is the most central option and the newest, opening on the third floor of the Northumberland Street store at the end of 2025. It pairs five play zones for ages nought to twelve with a proper café, good coffee and a licensed bar for the grown-ups, which makes it as much a place to meet friends as to let the children loose. You can walk in, but booking a ninety-minute session guarantees entry at busy times, and it sits directly on the main shopping street so it folds neatly into a day in town.

Jungle Jack's Adventure is the other genuinely central choice, tucked inside the Better Eldon Leisure centre in Grey's Quarter at Eldon Square. It is a large jungle-themed frame for children aged eight and under, open every day from mid-morning with last entry in the afternoon, and there is a café so parents can sit with a coffee while the children play. Being inside the shopping centre it is fully undercover and easy to reach on foot from Monument or by Metro.

The big dedicated centres, a short ride out

If you want the largest frames and the longest sessions, two of the North East's best-known centres are a few minutes out at Benton, both easy to reach by Metro or car. Round The Twist on the North Tyne Industrial Estate bills itself as the biggest soft play in the region, with a huge multi-level frame, a toddler area and a free-to-use arcade included in the admission price, plus meal-deal tickets that bundle play, a main and a drink. New Adventurelands on Benton Road takes the opposite, no-frills approach that many parents love: no booking, no time limit, free entry for adults and free parking, so you can stay as long as the children last.

Free indoor play in the city centre

You do not always need a dedicated soft play. Several of the city's free museums keep drop-in play areas for the youngest visitors, which are a good rainy-day fallback right in the centre. The Discovery Museum at Blandford Square has an under-fives Mini Maze with soft blocks and sensory toys, and the Great North Museum: Hancock on Barras Bridge has the Mouse House, a space for under-fives with activity walls, dressing-up and a crawling tunnel. Both are free to enter and step-free, and both sit alongside the rest of a free museum, so a wet morning need not cost anything. Tips for visiting

Grippy socks are compulsory at most soft play centres, so bring a pair each and a spare, or expect to buy them at the door. Weekends and school holidays get busy from opening, so the calmer sessions are weekday mornings in term time; if you are heading somewhere that takes bookings, such as Hopscotch, reserve a slot at peak times rather than risk a wait. Most centres let one adult in free with a paying child and charge for extra grown-ups, and the café is usually the point of the visit for the adults, so factor that in. Finally, check each centre's own website for current prices and opening hours before you set off, as they change with the school calendar.
