About The Broad Chare

The Broad Chare stands on the chare of the same name just off Newcastle's Quayside, a few steps from the Live Theatre, with which it was developed in partnership. It was opened by chef restaurateur Terry Laybourne's 21 Hospitality Group, the company behind 21 and Dobson & Parnell, and the brief was a proper pub rather than a restaurant in pub clothing: cask ale at the bar, bar snacks running through the afternoon, and a dining room upstairs where the kitchen does the more considered work.

The food is British and produce-led, built on North East suppliers, and the pub has a long-standing reputation for its Sunday lunch. Sunday is a lunch-only affair, with the dining room open from midday to around five and no evening dinner service, and the roast is usually a short choice of joints served with the full trimmings. Booking is advised, particularly when the theatre next door has a matinee on.
