Strachan Veterinary Group runs its main surgery at 36 Heaton Road, on the busy shopping stretch of Heaton just across the Ouseburn from the city centre, with a second branch out at Tynemouth. It is an independent practice rather than part of one of the national chains, and it treats the full range of companion animals seen in the city, from cats and dogs to small mammals, birds and exotics. The Heaton Road position makes it one of the closest practices to the eastern edge of central Newcastle, reachable in a few minutes by bus or Metro to Chillingham Road or Byker, with a client car park for those driving in.

Day-to-day the practice covers vaccinations, neutering, microchipping, dental work, diagnostics and routine and emergency surgery, and it offers behavioural therapy for pets with anxiety or problem behaviour, which not every neighbourhood surgery provides.
