Oliver & Eden

Third-generation family butcher in the Grainger Market, trading since 1949 and sourcing beef, lamb and chicken from Northumberland farms.

About Oliver & Eden

Oliver & Eden is a family butcher on Alley 3 of the Grainger Market, at unit 108, and has traded in the market since 1949. It is the only third-generation butcher left in the building. The counter is built around Northumbrian meat with named provenance rather than anonymous wholesale boxes: lamb from Seahouses on the Northumberland coast, chicken from farms up towards the Scottish border, and prime beef from Lesbury near Alnwick. Cuts are prepared on site, and the team will bone, roll, trim or portion to order, which is the main practical reason people walk past a supermarket chiller to get here. The shop opens early, from seven in the morning, Monday to Saturday.

Jerry Eden, who runs the business, first started helping behind the family counter at the age of twelve, and the shop's reputation rests largely on the freshness and locality of what he buys. That long continuity is unusual even by Grainger Market standards, and it places Oliver & Eden among the handful of traders whose families have worked the same alleys across several generations. Shoppers tend to combine a visit here with the market's fishmongers, greengrocers and cheese counter, all of which sit within the same covered Grade I listed hall off Clayton Street and Nun Street. For anyone learning to cook a less familiar cut, the advice offered across the counter is part of the service.
