Newcastle Register Office

Newcastle City Council's register office at the Civic Centre, where deaths in Newcastle are registered by appointment, normally within five days of the medical examiner making contact.

About Newcastle Register Office

Newcastle Register Office, reached through the Arches Reception at the Civic Centre on Barras Bridge, is Newcastle City Council's registration service for births, deaths, marriages and civil partnerships. Any death that happens in the city, including at the Royal Victoria Infirmary and the Freeman Hospital, is registered here. The office works by appointment only, booked by phone (ask for registrars) or by email at registrars@newcastle.gov.uk, once the medical examiner or coroner has sent the paperwork.

The council asks for a death to be registered within five days of the medical examiner contacting the family, weekends and bank holidays included. At the appointment the registrar records the death, issues certified copies of the death certificate (£12.50 each, card payment only) and offers the free Tell Us Once service, which notifies most government departments in one step. Haymarket Metro station is a short walk away.
