About Mason + Rye

Mason + Rye is the in-house bakery and patisserie of Fenwick, the independently owned department store that has anchored Northumberland Street since 1882, and it sits within the store's food hall on the lower level. Everything is made on site each day: patisserie, cookies, cakes, artisan sandwiches and salads, with fresh juices and coffee to go alongside. The fit-out includes a glazed theatre bakery where the pastry chefs can be watched at work, which is an unusually open arrangement for a department store counter and a genuine reason to detour through.

Its position puts it in the middle of the retail core, a couple of minutes from Monument Metro and Eldon Square, which makes it the natural bakery stop in the middle of a shopping trip rather than a destination in its own right. Hours follow the store rather than market hours, so it is open later in the day and on Sunday, when most of the city centre's independent bakeries are shut. The wider Fenwick Food Hall around it also carries independent counters, so it is worth a full circuit.
