Kalimera Greek Bakery opened its city centre shop at 7 Nelson Street, the short street running off Grainger Street beside the Grainger Market and two minutes from Grey's Monument, as a second site following its original Gosforth bakery. The counter is a straightforwardly Greek one: savoury pies and pastries, baklava and sweet filo work, filled sandwiches and Greek coffee, with the baking rather than the seating as the point of the business. It was the first Greek bakery of its kind to open in the city and has drawn a steady following since.

What makes it particularly useful in the city centre is its hours. Most of Newcastle's bakeries are Monday to Saturday operations that close by four, and the Grainger Market traders shut entirely on Sunday, whereas Kalimera opens seven days, from eight in the morning on weekdays and from nine at the weekend, running into the early evening. That makes it the reliable option for anyone looking for a bakery counter on a Sunday or after the retail core has emptied.
