Jasmine Bakery House has traded at 24 Fenkle Street since 1994, which makes it by some distance the longest-established Chinese bakery in Newcastle and one of the older independent food businesses in the city centre. It sits just west of Chinatown, between Stowell Street and Westgate Road, and has built its reputation among the city's Chinese community first and a wider local following since. The bakery counter runs Chinese breads, filled and steamed buns, egg tarts and cakes, all made to recipes you will not find in the chain bakeries a few streets away.

It is not purely a bakery. A hot menu of noodles, stir fries and soups runs alongside the counter, so it functions as a cheap and quick sit-down lunch as much as a place to take a bag of buns away. The room is plain and the service is brisk, which is part of the appeal. For anyone walking between Central Station, Chinatown and the Discovery Museum it is a short detour, and it is open later in the day than most of the city centre's bakery counters.
