Greggs was founded in Newcastle in 1939 by John Gregg, who began by delivering yeast and eggs to families across Tyneside by bicycle, and the company is still headquartered in the city. It has grown into the largest bakery chain in the United Kingdom without leaving the North East, which is why locally it is treated as a piece of Newcastle business history rather than simply another high street name. There are around a dozen shops inside the NE1 postcode alone, and the Grainger Street branch at numbers 73 to 75 is the most useful of them for anyone walking the main route between Central Station and Grey's Monument.

The shop carries the full range: sausage rolls, steak bakes and the vegan sausage roll, breakfast items, freshly prepared sandwiches, sweet bakes and Fairtrade coffee. It opens earlier than any independent bakery in the city centre, from the early hours of the morning on most days, which makes it the default for anyone catching a first train or starting an early shift.
