Fat Hippo started in Jesmond and has become a genuine North East success story, and its city-centre site on Shakespeare Street, a minute from Grey Street and Monument Metro, is the most central branch. The menu is built around indulgent, well-stacked burgers with buttery brioche buns, plus dirty fries, wings and thick shakes; the Original and the peanut-butter burger are the signatures, and there is a reliable run of vegetarian and vegan options. It is a sit-down restaurant at heart but is very much geared to takeaway too.

It is open daily from late morning until ten, and you can collect via their loyalty system or order through the usual delivery apps. For city-centre workers and shoppers it is one of the safest bets for a quality burger without heading out to the suburbs, and although it sits a notch above the chains on price, the portions and consistency justify it.
