Dog and Scone is Newcastle's first and only dedicated dog cafe, tucked down Pudding Chare, one of the narrow medieval lanes off the Bigg Market in the heart of Grainger Town. The concept is aimed squarely at dog lovers who cannot keep a dog of their own: you book a timed session, take off your shoes in line with the cafe's hygiene policy, and spend it in a garden-themed room in the company of a small pack of free-roaming resident dogs while enjoying cakes, scones and hot drinks. Sessions run to the hour and are capped at a small number of guests, so the room never feels crowded and the dogs are never overwhelmed.

Because it works on a pre-booked, timed-session model, it is not a drop-in coffee stop and it is not somewhere to bring your own dog; the resident dogs are the whole point. Spaces are released a few weeks ahead and can be reserved online, with a small deposit taken at booking and the balance paid on arrival. It has become a well-known Newcastle novelty for visitors and a gentle, low-key outing for anyone who wants canine company without the commitment. For families and dog-starved students in particular it is one of the more distinctive city-centre experiences, and its central position makes it easy to combine with a wider day around Grainger Town.
