Bread Point sits at 13 Low Friar Street, on the southern edge of Newcastle's Chinatown a short walk from Stowell Street and the Chinese Arch, and it works as both a bakery counter and a small cafe. The baking deliberately mixes traditions, so Chinese and wider Asian lines such as pork buns, egg custard tarts and soft sweet breads sit on the same counter as more familiar European pastries and cakes. Prices are modest and turnover is quick, which is why the counter looks different depending on when you arrive.

Beyond the bakery side there is a hot menu for anyone sitting in or taking away, including pho and other noodle dishes, with bubble tea and Asian soft drinks. It is a genuinely useful stop for anyone visiting Chinatown, the Gate or the St James' Park end of the centre, and it is one of the few places in the city where the custard tarts are made to a Chinese rather than a Portuguese recipe. Low Friar Street is a couple of minutes from both Grainger Street and Stowell Street.
