Yoga in Newcastle City Centre: Studios and Classes
Where to practise yoga in and around central Newcastle, from a beginner-friendly studio on Carliol Square and a long-running studio by the Ouseburn to the mind-and-body classes at the city's gyms.
Yoga in the middle of Newcastle is a smaller world than you might expect. The centre is mostly shops, offices and student flats, so most of the city's dedicated studios sit just outside it, in Jesmond, Heaton and the Ouseburn. But there is still a good choice within walking distance of Grey's Monument: one independent studio right in town, one of the city's longest-running studios a short walk east, and yoga classes inside two of the central gyms for people who would rather fit a session around a workout or a lunch break.
This guide sorts the options by what they are, so you can pick the right fit whether you are a nervous beginner, an experienced practitioner after a full weekly timetable, or simply want a stretch before work.
Dedicated yoga studios
A dedicated studio is the best choice if yoga is the main thing you want to do. Classes are smaller, teachers have more time for questions and adjustments, and you get a much wider range of styles than a gym timetable can offer.
Happy Yoga Newcastle is the studio closest to the heart of town, in British India House on Carliol Square, a few minutes from Monument and Manors Metro. It was founded in 2015 by Jo Hutton, a Senior Yoga Teacher with Yoga Alliance Professionals, and the name is a fair summary of the approach: classes are relaxed and light-hearted, and the studio goes out of its way to welcome "unfit, un-bendy beginners". The timetable covers beginners, all-levels and intermediate yoga, plus pregnancy and postnatal classes, and there is an online studio with live and on-demand sessions for the weeks you cannot get in.
A few practical points. Classes must be booked in advance online or through the booking app, as the studio cannot take payment at the door. The entrance is the large door signposted Digital Colour Copy Bureau, up one flight of stairs, and mats and equipment are provided. There is metered parking outside, and the Manors multi-storey car park is two minutes away. At the time of writing a three-week unlimited intro offer is £30 and a single class is £12, but check the Happy Yoga pricing page for current prices.
Best for: The most central dedicated studio, and the friendliest place in town for a complete beginner or a pregnancy class.
Yoga x Life Studios has been running since 2013 and is one of the longest-established yoga communities in Newcastle. Its purpose-built studios are at Bryson Court on Portland Road, on the Shieldfield edge of the Ouseburn, roughly a fifteen-minute walk from Monument. This is the place for the fullest timetable in or near the centre: classes run seven days a week and range from foundations and slower flow through dynamic and power sessions to restorative practice with bolsters and longer holds, plus guided meditation and breath-led classes.
New students can start with a 14-day trial, £25 at the time of writing, which gives unlimited scheduled classes for a fortnight from your first session. Mats and props are provided, classes are booked through the website or the Yoga x Life Studios app, and the studio also has a cafe. If you catch the bug, it runs 200-hour teacher training, workshops, sound baths and retreats too.
Best for: The biggest timetable near the centre, with everything from gentle restorative classes to strong flow and teacher training.
Yoga at city-centre gyms
If you already use a gym, or want yoga as one part of a wider fitness routine, two central clubs include it in their class programmes.
Workout Central is the premium option, a large fitness and wellness club in the Spire development on Pilgrim Street, close to the Tyne Bridge. It has dedicated mind-and-body studios for yoga, mat Pilates and mobility work alongside reformer Pilates and spin studios, a gym floor and a spa, so it suits anyone who wants yoga, strength training and recovery under one membership.
Best for: Yoga within a premium club, with spa and recovery facilities on site.
PureGym Newcastle Eldon Garden on Percy Street is the budget choice. It is open 24 hours a day, and its class timetable, included in the no-contract membership, features yoga among its mind, core and strength sessions, including early-morning slots that work before an office day. Classes are booked through the PureGym website or app, and the timetable changes week to week, so check before you go.
Best for: An affordable way to fit a yoga class around a gym session, right by Haymarket.
Prefer Pilates?
Yoga and Pilates often get mentioned in the same breath, but they are different practices. If what you really want is core strength and controlled, low-impact conditioning, Reform Studio on Akenside Hill by the Quayside is the city's dedicated reformer and mat Pilates studio, with sauna and cold-plunge recovery on site.
Choosing a class
If you are new to yoga, look for classes labelled beginners, foundations or slow flow, where the teacher will take time over the basic postures and breathing. Tell the teacher about any injuries, health conditions or pregnancy before the class starts so they can offer alternatives. Arrive ten to fifteen minutes early for your first visit, wear comfortable clothes you can move in, and do not worry about flexibility: that is what the practice builds, not what it requires.
Most studios offer a discounted trial for newcomers, which is the cheapest way to try several teachers and styles before committing to a membership.
