NIPO Opens on the Quayside: Where Japan Meets Brazil

Newcastle's Quayside has a striking new dining destination. NIPO welcomed its first guests this week at 95 Quayside, bringing together two cuisines that rarely share a menu: the precision of Japan and the warmth of Brazil.

A new dining language

Created by the team behind RIO Brazilian Steakhouse, NIPO reimagines Brazilian hospitality through a Japanese lens. The kitchen turns out sushi prepared at a live counter, robata dishes cooked over charcoal, and Brazilian specialities including flame-cooked picanha, alongside larger sharing plates designed for the table. The name nods to the "Nipo-Brazilian" community, the deep-rooted Japanese-Brazilian culture that inspired the concept.

The restaurant opened with a VIP launch and is led by general manager Goran Natev, who arrives with experience from London's premium hospitality scene. It joins a Quayside that has become the city's most competitive stretch for ambitious restaurants, a short walk from the Millennium Bridge, the Baltic and the riverside bars.

For a city that already does Brazilian churrasco and Japanese dining well as separate things, a restaurant that fuses the two is something genuinely different.
