The Camera Shop occupies a former camera shop dating from 1907 on Collingwood Street, and has kept the name, the green Victorian shopfront and a good deal of the original fitting-out. It has traded as an independent cafe since 2008, and the contrast between the shop's photographic past and its current use is a large part of why people notice it on a street otherwise given over to bars and offices.

It is a weekday operation, opening early and closing mid-afternoon, and it runs on the office trade from the surrounding professional quarter, which means a queue at peak times. The food is straightforward and generous rather than styled, with a sausage sandwich on soda bread, wraps, toasties and jacket potatoes, and its peanut latte has a following of its own. Central Station and Monument are both a short walk, and it sits directly on the route between the two.
