Pink Lane Coffee opened in 2012 on the corner of Pink Lane, directly across from Newcastle Central Station, and was one of the shops that established speciality coffee in the city centre. The lane itself is a short cobbled street behind the station running up towards Westgate Road, and the cafe is small, busy and quick, which suits a location where a good share of customers are catching or coming off a train. It now trades as part of Pink Lane Coffee Collective, with its own roasting and wholesale side alongside the cafe, and beans are sold to take home as well as brewed on site.

The offer is deliberately tight: filter and espresso drinks made properly, sandwiches prepared fresh each day and a counter of cakes, rather than a full brunch kitchen. Opening hours run from early on weekdays and slightly later at weekends, closing mid-afternoon every day, so it is a morning and lunchtime stop rather than an evening one. Seating is limited and turns over fast at peak times. For anyone arriving in Newcastle by rail and wanting a first cup that is not from a chain, it is the closest independent option to the station concourse and remains one of the most consistent.
