About North Shore Coffee Co

North Shore was founded by Toby Davison, who named it after Alnmouth, the Northumberland village he grew up in. It started in 2015 as a gazebo and a coffee machine on the Quayside Market, became a fully fitted coffee van in 2019, and then took a permanent pitch in the Grainger Market at the Clayton Street end, kitted out to a Melbourne-influenced spec of pale timber and open counters. The company now roasts its own beans in small batches at Noble Street Industrial Estate on Scotswood Road and supplies other venues across the city.

The market unit does espresso, batch brew and the rest of the standard specialty range, alongside toasties and bakes made at the company's own Sandyford bakery, and it retails brewing equipment and bags of the current roasts. It is one of two North Shore sites within reach of the centre, the other being the larger Neighbourhood 2.0 on St Mary's Terrace between the universities. Being inside the market it keeps market hours, so it is a morning and early-afternoon stop rather than an evening one.
