Mark Toney

Family-run Italian-heritage ice cream maker trading in Newcastle since 1892, with parlour cafes on Grainger Street and Percy Street.

About Mark Toney

Mark Toney has been making ice cream in Newcastle since 1892, when Giovanni Marcantonio came to the city from Picinisco in central Italy. The business has stayed in the family ever since and still hand-makes its award-winning dairy ice cream to the original family recipe at its own production unit in Benton.

There are two city-centre parlour cafes. The Grainger Street branch has traded since 1962 and is described as the oldest coffee shop in the city, displaying ice cream memorabilia, awards and historic photographs, while the Percy Street branch, opened in 1974, sits opposite Haymarket bus station and Metro. Both serve cones, sundaes, waffles and a traditional cafe menu.
