About Lagom Speciality Coffee Bar

Lagom opened in June 2024 on Monk Street, in the quiet block between Westgate Road and the back of Central Station, and takes its name from the Swedish idea of lagom: not too little, not too much, just right. It was launched by Matt Mitchell, co-founder of the Durham roastery Fika Coffee Roasters, with Charlie Doyle, an army veteran turned local coffee advocate. The fit-out is deliberately spare and Scandinavian, a small room built around the counter rather than around table service.

The format is four rotating specialty coffees at any one time, two on espresso and two on filter, mostly single origins from the Americas and Africa, with a Roast of the Week sold in bags only in store. Free public cuppings run regularly, which is unusual in the city and worth timing a visit around if you want to taste properly. Pastries and cakes come from local makers. It is dog friendly with a few outdoor seats, and Central Station Metro is a two-minute walk.
