House of Tides

Kenny Atkinson's Michelin-starred tasting-menu restaurant in a Grade I listed merchant's house on the Quayside.

About House of Tides

House of Tides opened in February 2014 in a Grade I listed sixteenth-century merchant's town house on The Close, the narrow riverside street that runs west from the Tyne Bridge beneath the Castle Keep. Chef patron Kenny Atkinson has held a Michelin star here for most of the restaurant's life, and it remains one Michelin star in the current guide. The building does a lot of the work: bare boards, exposed stone and timber, and a ground-floor bar that feels more like a townhouse sitting room than a restaurant lobby. It is generally regarded as the city's flagship fine-dining address and the room most often booked for an anniversary or a milestone.

The format is a set seasonal tasting menu rather than a la carte, with strong use of North East produce, and diners should allow a full evening. Service runs Thursday to Sunday, with lunch on Friday and Saturday, dinner Thursday to Saturday and a more relaxed Sunday service that includes bar-only hours in the early afternoon. The restaurant is closed Monday to Wednesday. Atkinson also runs Solstice a few minutes away on Side, and has held Michelin stars at both addresses at the same time. Tables are limited and go quickly, so book well ahead.
