About 5|Quarter at The Common Room

5|Quarter is the cafe bar inside The Common Room, the heritage venue created from Neville Hall on Westgate Road, the Victorian home of the North of England Institute of Mining and Mechanical Engineers. The name comes from a seam of the Great Northern Coalfield. The building was restored and reopened as a public venue, and because there is no admission charge to walk in, the cafe doubles as the easiest way to see the Wood Memorial Hall library, one of the finest interiors in the city.

It serves hot drinks and cakes through the day and shifts to wine, cocktails and beer later on, and it is used as a meeting place as much as a destination. The building sits between Central Station and Grainger Town, so it fits neatly into a walk between the two, and the events programme upstairs means it is worth checking what is on before visiting. Central Station Metro is about four minutes away.
