Golf Driving Ranges in and around Newcastle: Where to Practise
A practical guide to the best golf driving ranges within reach of Newcastle, from the big floodlit range at High Gosforth Park to Toptracer bays at Close House and George Washington, with notes on who each one suits.
Whether you are grooving a new swing, warming up before a round, or just fancy hitting a bucket of balls after work, Newcastle is well served for driving ranges. The pick of them are floodlit, so they stay useful through the dark Tyneside winter, and several now carry Toptracer technology that puts your carry distance and shot shape up on a screen. This guide runs through the genuine practice ranges within easy reach of the city, what each one offers, and who it suits, whether you are a complete beginner or a serious player chasing consistency.
High Gosforth Park: the big one in the city
The obvious first stop, and the largest range actually inside Newcastle, is the driving range at High Gosforth Park in Gosforth, set within the grounds of Newcastle Racecourse off the Great North Road. It runs to 28 covered, floodlit bays with quality mats, Srixon balls and multiple targets down the range, so there is almost always a bay free even at busy times.
Ten of those bays now feature Toptracer Range technology, which tracks every shot and shows your ball speed, carry distance and shot shape on screen, alongside game modes that make a session more fun for newer golfers. That mix is what makes it such a good all-rounder: the standard bays suit straightforward practice or a quick warm-up, while the Toptracer bays reward anyone working on numbers and consistency. The range is open to the public seven days a week, typically 9am to 9pm on weekdays and 9am to 7pm at weekends, with last balls sold around an hour before close (always check current times, as they shift with the season and weather). Balls are sold by the basket, so you pay per bucket rather than by the hour. Book a bay online through the racecourse golf pages, via the Elitelive app, or by calling the golf shop on 0191 236 3322. The site is a wider golf complex, with an 18-hole course, mini golf and Parklands Golf Club on the same grounds, so it is an easy family outing as much as a solo practice trip. It sits at NE3 5HP, a short drive from the A1, with parking on site.
Best for: Toptracer bays are usually a little dearer than standard bays and can get booked up at peak evening times, especially in winter. If you specifically want the shot-tracking tech, reserve a Toptracer bay ahead rather than turning up and hoping one is free.
Close House: the academy option in the Tyne Valley
Just to the west, at Heddon-on-the-Wall, Close House is the most polished practice setup within a short drive of the city, and it is only around ten minutes out on the north bank of the Tyne Valley. Its 20-bay floodlit driving range is part of a full PGA golf academy, complete with Toptracer, dedicated tuition bays, custom-fit suites and a specialist short-game area.
That academy focus makes Close House the natural choice if you want more than just a bucket of balls. It is the place to book a lesson, get properly fitted for clubs, or work on your short game rather than only bashing drivers. The resort is best known for its two Lee Westwood-endorsed 18-hole courses, the Colt and the Filly, and for its hotel and dining, so a practice session can easily fold into a wider day out. It is worth noting the range is part of a resort rather than a pure pay-and-play range, so check current access, prices and any booking requirements before setting off. You will find it at NE15 0HT, signposted from Heddon-on-the-Wall, with the golf desk reachable on 01661 852255.
George Washington: Toptracer just across the county line
A little further afield, but still an easy trip from most of Newcastle, George Washington Golf Club in Washington runs a 16-bay floodlit range that has been fitted with Toptracer technology. It sits handily for the south of the city and for anyone coming from the Team Valley or Wearside side, roughly between Newcastle, Sunderland and Durham.
The draw here is the same shot-tracking tech as High Gosforth Park, with interactive games, competitions and analysis built into the bays, and no membership or pre-booking strictly required, though booking ahead is sensible at busy times. Hours run late, typically from 9am to 9pm daily with last balls around half past eight, which makes it a solid evening option if you are working during the day. You can book through the club's online system or by calling on 0191 417 8346. For south-Newcastle players it can be a shorter hop than heading north to Gosforth, and the Toptracer parity means you are not trading down on facilities.
Best for: All three ranges are floodlit, which matters a great deal here. From October through March you can still get a proper evening session in after dark, so do not write off winter practice.
Choosing the right range
If you want the biggest, most central range with the most bays and a genuine buzz, High Gosforth Park is the default choice, and its position inside Newcastle makes it the easiest to reach for most people in the city. Complete beginners and casual hitters are well catered for there, and the Toptracer bays give improvers something to measure against.
If you are serious about lowering your handicap, want structured coaching, or are thinking about a club fitting, Close House is the standout for its academy setup and short-game facilities, with the trade-off of being a resort a few miles out rather than a drop-in city range. And if you live towards the south of the city, George Washington offers the same Toptracer experience with often shorter travel and late opening hours. All three keep the lights on through winter, so there is no real off-season for practice on Tyneside.
A few practical tips
Whichever you choose, a couple of habits make a session more worthwhile. Buy a smaller basket and hit each ball with intent rather than racing through a huge bucket, warm up with short irons before reaching for the driver, and if a range has Toptracer, use it to set yourself simple targets rather than just admiring the numbers. Book a Toptracer bay ahead in the darker months when they fill up fastest, and sanity-check current prices and opening times with the venue, as baskets, tech surcharges and seasonal hours all change.
