Plumbing in Newcastle city centre comes with its own quirks. Much of the housing is apartments, in converted Grainger Town offices, warehouse buildings along the Quayside and newer blocks around the Ouseburn and Central Station, where pipework runs through shared risers and a leak can quickly become the downstairs neighbour's problem. Older buildings bring tired heating systems and awkward access, and parking a van anywhere near Grey Street is never simple.

Very few plumbing and heating firms actually keep premises inside NE1, so this guide looks at established Newcastle businesses with proper business bases a short drive from the centre that cover the city's central streets. All of them state that they use Gas Safe registered engineers, which is the legal requirement for any work on a gas boiler, fire or cooker.

Tyneside Heating Services

Tyneside Heating Services is the closest of the four to the city centre, based by St Peter's Basin at the eastern end of the Quayside. It is a family-run limited company, registered at Companies House since 2013, and its team cites around 24 years of experience in heating and plumbing.

The firm covers Newcastle, Sunderland and Northumberland. Its work spans boiler installation, servicing and repair, full heating systems, general plumbing, underfloor heating, smart heating controls and hot water storage, and it is one of the few smaller firms here that lists commercial boiler systems alongside domestic work, which is useful for city-centre shops, studios and small offices. It also issues gas safety certificates and carries out LPG gas checks for caravans.

Best for: Best for: a nearby, family-run firm that handles both flats and small commercial premises.

Aubrey Cornfoot

Aubrey Cornfoot is about as long-established as Newcastle plumbing gets. The business has been family run since 1946 and became a limited company in 1966, and it works from Bowsden Terrace in South Gosforth, a few miles north of the city centre.

It is a Worcester Bosch accredited installer, meaning its Worcester boiler installations come with the manufacturer's extended guarantee, and it is Gas Safe registered. Services cover gas and oil boiler installation, servicing and repair, central heating, hot water systems, powerflushing, underfloor heating, fireplaces, bathroom and shower installation, and landlord gas safety certificates (CP12). Its stated working area takes in Newcastle and Gateshead and stretches much further, from Durham up to Berwick.

Best for: Best for: boiler replacements and bathrooms from a firm with 80 years behind it.

Gas Angel Heating

Gas Angel Heating was established in 2007 and is based at Dobson House in Gosforth, with a second branch in Westerhope. It is Gas Safe registered, holds Which? Trusted Trader status, and is MCS certified to design and install heat pumps, which makes it a good call if you are weighing up a lower-carbon option rather than a like-for-like boiler swap.

Day to day, the team handles new boilers, boiler servicing and repairs, central heating and radiators, power flushing, gas fires, gas cookers and hobs, smart thermostats and landlord gas safety checks. It also sells boiler cover plans, which some city-centre landlords use to keep annual servicing and breakdown repairs on one predictable bill.

Best for: Best for: landlords, boiler cover plans and anyone considering a heat pump.

Newcastle Plumbing & Bath Centre

If you are planning a bathroom rather than fixing a leak, Newcastle Plumbing & Bath Centre on Two Ball Lonnen in Fenham is worth the short trip west. It is a plumbers' merchant selling taps, showers, baths, boilers and radiators, with a showroom of bathroom suites and wet rooms, and it also offers bathroom fitting and installation. The showroom opens Monday to Friday from 8am to 5pm and on Saturdays from 9am to 4pm.

Best for: Best for: seeing bathroom suites in person and sourcing parts before work starts.

Tips for city-centre flats and offices

Check who is responsible. In a rented flat, plumbing and heating repairs usually go through your landlord or letting agent, and landlords must arrange a gas safety check every year. In an owned apartment, communal pipework, risers and water tanks are often the managing agent's job, so check your lease before calling someone out. A leak in the street or on the public side of your stopcock is a matter for Northumbrian Water, the water company for Newcastle.

Know where your stopcock is. In converted buildings it can be somewhere unexpected, such as a hallway cupboard, under the kitchen sink or in a shared service room. Finding it before an emergency can save a ceiling below.

Verify Gas Safe registration. Ask the engineer for their Gas Safe ID card and check it on the Gas Safe Register website, which also shows exactly which types of appliance they are qualified to work on. For limited companies, Companies House will confirm the firm is active.

Get written quotes. For anything beyond a small repair, ask at least two firms for a written quote, and check whether call-out, parking or parts charges are extra. City-centre parking can add time and cost, so it is fair to ask about it up front. Our guide to council services in Newcastle city centre covers parking permits and the Clean Air Zone if you need to arrange access for a tradesperson.

Look for accreditations that matter to the job. Manufacturer accreditation (such as Worcester Bosch) can extend a new boiler's guarantee, MCS certification is needed for heat pump grants, and schemes such as Which? Trusted Trader carry out their own checks on member firms.
