Baby and Toddler Groups in Newcastle City Centre

The centre of Newcastle is not where you would expect to find a church-hall toddler group: it is shops, offices and student flats rather than the residential streets where stay-and-play sessions usually run. But that does not mean there is nothing for babies and toddlers in town. Some of the best free early-years sessions in the city happen in its museums and its library, all within a short walk or Metro ride of Grey's Monument, and they are a friendly, low-cost way to meet other parents. Here is where to take a baby or toddler in and around the city centre, and how to find a neighbourhood group when you want one.

Museum sessions for under-fives

The city's free museums run some of the most reliable baby and toddler sessions in the centre. The Great North Museum: Hancock on Barras Bridge has a whole strand for the youngest visitors: Nurture Nest for pre-crawling babies, with tummy time, songs and sensory play; Curious Crawlers for early movers, with den spaces and toys to explore; Museum Mice, a play-and-explore session for under-fives; and Mouse Tales storytime. It also keeps the Mouse House, a permanent under-fives space with dressing-up and a crawling tunnel, so there is somewhere to go even between booked sessions.

The Discovery Museum at Blandford Square is the other strong option, with an under-fives Mini Maze of soft blocks and sensory activities plus its Tiny Sparks sessions for three- to five-year-olds, where little ones hear stories about science and handle curious objects. Both museums are free to enter and step-free throughout, which makes them easy with a pushchair, though individual sessions are sometimes ticketed and often need booking, so check what is on before you travel.

Rhyme time at the library

Newcastle City Library on New Bridge Street West runs free rhyme-time and baby-bounce sessions for babies and toddlers in its children's library on a lower level. They are a gentle introduction to songs and stories, cost nothing, and sit inside one of the best free wet-weather buildings in the centre, three minutes from Monument Metro. Sessions run on set days through the week; ask at the desk or check the council's library pages for the current timetable.

The Farrell Centre

Newcastle University's Farrell Centre on Eldon Place, the city's centre for architecture and cities, is free to enter and keeps a small play area with books, crafts and building blocks in its Urban Rooms. It also runs Little Builders sessions for under-fives, with story time, den building and craft led by its education team. It is open Wednesday to Sunday and sits just off the top of the shopping streets, so it pairs well with a trip into town.

Finding a neighbourhood group

For a traditional stay-and-play group, the kind that runs weekly in a church or community hall, look just outside the immediate centre in Jesmond, Sandyford, Heaton and the west end, where most of them meet. The council's Families Information Service keeps the register of groups, childcare and family activities across the city and is the best place to find a current, local list, and the charity Children North East runs Stay and Play sessions at its family hubs. Ask at the City Library or a children's centre too, as many groups advertise on the noticeboards rather than online.
