Newcastlecity.live·

Newcastle city centre is the North East's professional services quarter, and accountancy firms of every size have offices within a few minutes' walk of Grey's Monument and Central Station. Whether you are a freelancer facing your first self-assessment return, a café owner who needs payroll and VAT taken off your hands, or a growing company that now needs a statutory audit, there is a firm here that fits. Here are the practices worth a conversation, from the big regional names to smaller teams, plus some tips on choosing one.

Larger independent practices

UNW

UNW is a Newcastle chartered accountancy firm based at Citygate on St James' Boulevard, a short walk from Central Station and St James' Park. It describes itself as acting for businesses of all shapes and sizes, charities, not-for-profit organisations and many individuals. Its core services are audit and assurance, accounting services, tax and deal advisory, with specialist teams for VAT, employment taxes, payroll, grant support and charities, plus a dedicated dental practice team.

Its tax teams cover both company and personal tax, including personal tax compliance and advice, trusts and estate planning and property planning, so it suits owner-managers who want their business and personal affairs looked after under one roof.

Best for: Best for: owner-managed and family businesses, charities and dental practices.

Clive Owen

Clive Owen is an independent firm of chartered accountants and business advisers with its head office in Darlington and offices in Durham, Middlesbrough, York and Newcastle. The Newcastle team is on the fourth floor of Gainsborough House on Grey Street, open Monday to Friday.

The firm covers accountancy, audit, tax and advisory work, from personal tax, VAT and Making Tax Digital through to corporate finance, R&D tax relief, grants advice and succession planning. It lists construction, digital and technology, manufacturing, professional services, property and retail among its sectors.

Best for: Best for: growing regional businesses wanting a full-service independent firm.

Armstrong Watson

Armstrong Watson has its Newcastle office on the first floor of One Strawberry Lane, next to St James' Park. From there it offers accountancy, tax and advisory services, including audit, payroll, Xero cloud accounting, corporate finance, business rescue and help with HMRC enquiries. On the personal side it has financial planning, pensions and private client tax advice.

It also lists agriculture and farming as a key North East sector, which makes it a useful city centre option for rural businesses as well as urban ones.

Best for: Best for: larger owner-managed businesses, farms and people wanting tax and financial planning together.

Smaller and specialist firms

Vertax Accountants

Vertax Accountants are chartered accountants and business advisers working from Charlotte Square, tucked behind Westgate Road. They are a Xero partner and focus on fast-growing businesses in creative industries, food and hospitality, and eCommerce and technology, sectors where cash flow can swing month to month.

Services include bookkeeping, payroll, management and statutory accounts, business and personal tax, cash flow forecasting and business coaching. They sell monthly packages by sector, so they suit a business that wants an ongoing relationship rather than a one-off tax return.

Best for: Best for: young hospitality, creative and online businesses using Xero.

Forvis Mazars

Forvis Mazars is part of an international audit, tax and advisory firm, with its Newcastle office in Bank Chambers on Mosley Street, a grade II listed building known as The Corner. The Newcastle team concentrates on external and internal audit for public and private sector bodies, along with technology consulting and assurance, and it works with councils, police, fire and NHS bodies across the region.

This is not the place for a simple self-assessment return, but if your organisation needs a large-firm auditor with a city centre base it is one of the main options.

Best for: Best for: larger organisations and public bodies needing audit and assurance.

Sole traders and self-assessment

If you only need one tax return a year, you do not have to use a large practice. Many smaller chartered and certified accountants and AAT-licensed bookkeepers across Newcastle offer fixed-fee self-assessment, so ask two or three for a quote and check what is included. Keep the key dates in mind: the deadline for online self-assessment returns, and for paying any tax due, is 31 January after the end of the tax year, and paper returns are due by 31 October.

Making Tax Digital for Income Tax is also arriving. Sole traders and landlords with qualifying income over £50,000 have had to keep digital records and send quarterly updates since April 2026, with the threshold falling to £30,000 from April 2027. If that affects you, ask any prospective accountant which software they support.

If you are just starting out, free help is available before you pay anyone. Our guide to business support in Newcastle city centre covers PNE's start-up mentoring and the finance experts at the Business and IP Centre in the City Library.

How to check an accountant

Anyone can call themselves an accountant, so it is worth checking qualifications before you sign up:

  • Chartered accountants (ACA or FCA) and their firms can be looked up on the ICAEW's Find a Chartered Accountant directory.
  • Chartered certified accountants (ACCA or FCCA) appear in ACCA's Find an Accountant search.
  • AAT-licensed accountants and bookkeepers are listed on the AAT's register of licensed members.
  • Statutory auditors must be registered, and you can check a firm on the public audit register.

Ask for a written engagement letter setting out exactly what is included and the fee, and check the firm holds professional indemnity insurance. Most practices are happy to have a short introductory call before you commit.
